3 Key Picks for Friday Night’s AFL Round 18

The 2019 AFL season continues this weekend with a fantastic slate of games for Round 18. The action gets underway on Friday night as the Essendon Bombers travel to South Australia to take on the Adelaide Crows from 7.50pm (AEST)!

Both Adelaide and Essendon find themselves holding onto the final two spots in the top eight and will be desperate for a win to stay ahead of the host of teams charging up the ladder in the final stretch of the season.

There are some great tournaments on offer at PlayON for the Friday night clash and plenty of cash up for grabs! As usual, we have our best fantasy tips for the night to make selecting your line-up a bit easier.

Gun for hire – Zach Merrett ($16.2m)

Want a guaranteed 100 that you can set and forget? Look no further than Bombers midfielder Zach Merrett. The star mid scored just 57 points against Sydney in Round 16 a few weeks ago but bounced back with a big 114 against the Kangaroos in his most recent game. That score of 57 was just the first time since Round 1 that the midfielder has scored under 90 points, and it broke an 11 game streak where he was averaging a ridiculous 115.3 fantasy points.

Excluding the game between the Bombers and Crows in Round 1 last season where Merrett was injured, the midfielder has averaged 117.5 in his last two games against the Crows including a monster 35 disposal, 7 tackle game against them in 2017. Merrett should be a lock for another 100+ here.

Dud to avoid – Shaun McKernan ($9.2m)

The Bombers utility player has had a few strong performances of late, most notably 92 points against the Giants in Round 15 and 102 points against the Swans in Round 16. However, he has really struggled in away games for the Bombers this year. His list of fantasy scores in away games reads 30, 79, 60, 19 compared to when the Dons play at home where he averages almost 75 points per game.

This will be McKernan’s fifth season at Essendon since coming over from Adelaide at the start of the 2015 season and in those five seasons he has never faced off against the Crows. There’s too many unknowns on the table for McKernan this weekend so we are opting to stay away.

Point of difference – Hugh Greenwood ($11.7m)

Greenwood has been impressive over the last few rounds, averaging 91.25 in his last four games. He scored a fantastic 115 against the Suns in his last game which included 22 disposals, 1 goal and 8 tackles. He is a mid-priced midfielder who won’t attract any attention from taggers and has a great record of getting on the scoresheet.

Greenwood has bagged at least one goal in his last five games in a row and has proven to be one of the best tacklers in the Crows midfield/forward line this season, averaging over 6 per game and racking up 31 in his last four games. With tackles being worth four points, it’s free points for Greenwood.
