The long weekend for AFL Round 12 wraps up on Monday afternoon for the traditional Queen’s Birthday clash between Collingwood and Melbourne. No matter where these two teams are on the ladder, this is always a big day for football and a spirited contest.
The Dees suffered another heartbreaking loss last week, going down to the Crows by just two points. Youngster Sam Weideman had a chance to be a hero with a late kick for goal to win the match, but it sailed wide. Melbourne are sadly a shell of their former selves and they just can’t find the form of last season. It starts in the middle where Clayton Oliver and Angus Brayshaw have been well down in form, which has made it hard for the likes of Tom McDonald to get anything going up forward. It’s time to start planning for 2020.
It’s going to be a real test for Melbourne to quell the powerhouse midfield of Collingwood. Dayne Beams has been ruled out with injury and Taylor Adams is still on the sidelines, but they have multiple players they can swing through the middle to cover the losses. Jordan De Goey is one of their most important players as he gives them a focus point up forward, while there was talk of Brodie Grundy having an ankle issue last week but he’s been declared fit to play. The battle between Grundy and Gawn should be one for the ages. The Pies won’t want to drop this match as they keep the pressure on Geelong at the top of the ladder.
Here’s our fantasy picks for Collingwood vs Melbourne to help you build your teams at PlayON.
Gun for hire – Scott Pendlebury ($15.2m)
With a few injuries in the midfield this season, it’s been skipper Scott Pendlebury who has stood tall for the Pies this season with some of the best form of his exceptional career. Pendlebury has a high fantasy ceiling with four scores above 120 points this season, including the last two weeks. You’ll get plenty of kicks and plenty of tackles from Pendles, which is a great fantasy base to launch from. On ANZAC Day, Pendlebury was best on ground, so he loves a big stage and you can expect another big game from him here.
Dud to avoid – Angus Brayshaw ($13.3m)
Gee there are so many duds in Melbourne this season to choose from, but perhaps the most disappointing has been Angus Brayshaw. It’s easy to forget that he was third in the Brownlow last season! His form has dropped away dramatically as they have experimented with him on a wing for periods of time. He really needs to be in the guts, in and under, and that’s what Melbourne are lacking! His fantasy average for the season is just 90 points, and he’s failed to get near a ton in his last four matches. Maybe there’s more going on than we know about, but for now, I’m happy to avoid, even at the discounted price.
Point of difference – Oskar Baker ($7.8m)
Collingwood stacks are going to be the order of the day for this match, so a point of difference will be to pick a Melbourne player. One who looks value is Oskar Baker. He’s only played three matches, but already has shown enough to indicate that he’s a promising young player. Baker picked up 21 touches last week and a fantasy score of 87 which is exceptional for his price. He’s improved every week and although this is a tough match up, he’s a good option if you’re looking for some salary cap relief.
That wraps up Round 12 – once you head to the Lobby and lock in your lineups, that is.
