Many tipped Sydney to slide down the ladder but did anyone expect them to fall this far? After seven rounds, the Swans sit last on the ladder, with their only win coming against Carlton in round three.
On Friday night, Sydney will host Essendon, who have at times looked equally terrible, but have also shown hints of remarkable. Their 3-4 record is a little underwhelming for a team that has been talked up for September action this season. If that’s the case, this is not a game they will want to drop.
Adding to the Swans’ woes is their terrible record at home – they’ve lost their last five games at the SCG. So much for home ground advantage!
PlayON are hosting some excellent fantasy AFL contests for this matches including a $500 Guaranteed content for just an $11 entry free. There are other cash guarantees, four-player and head-to-head contests. Let’s look at who you might consider for your teams.
Gun for hire – Zach Merrett $16.3m
Of the top midfielders in this contest, most wear red and black. Zach Merrett’s form is terrific, scoring 100s in his last four matches, and is the pick of the bunch. He’s also got the potential to go big, shown by his 143 in round five. The only question is where will Sydney’s tagger George Hewitt go? Will he tag Merrett or teammate Dylan Shiel? Merrett has struggled with a tag in the past so that could be his challenge on Friday night.
Dud to avoid – Orazio Fantasia $11.6m
Orazio Fantasia has the ability to change the game in an instant…if he plays. He’s missed the last two games as a late exclusion, so there’s serious doubts over his fitness. Three of his five scores this year have been 52 or less and historically doesn’t score well against the Swans. Be wary, and if you do pick him, make sure you keep an eye on late team announcements prior to the bounce!
Point of Difference – George Hewett $10.5m
The Swans have been lacking midfielders all season and Hewett is one who has stepped up to the plate. With scores of 87, 80 and 103 in his last three games, the versatile Swan is enjoying some career-best numbers. Last week he tagged Lachie Neale and kept the gun Lion to 84 points, while scoring 104 himself. Hewett is always good for plenty of tackles which provides a nice fantasy floor to launch from and his price is reasonable.
