Premier League Recap: Gameweek 9

Robin Van Persie celebrates his late equaliser against Chelsea

We review every game from week 9 of the Barclay’s Premier League

West Ham 2-1 Manchester City

This huge scalp claimed by West Ham at Upton Park was achieved through gutsy kitchen sink defending as well as sheer quality up front. A sobering reality check for City, West Ham are in dreamland.

PlayON MoM: Diafra Sakho

Key Stat: 3.3 shot average over seven games with six goals scored for the Senegalese. Clinical.

Southampton 1-0 Stoke City

The Saints go marching into second place after toughing out a victory against a stern Stoke side. Like West Ham, there are questions as to how long they can maintain this form. Regardless, what they have achieved so far deserves much credit.

PlayON MoM: Sadio Mané

Key Stat: 5. With five wins in the last six games Southampton are the Premier League form team.

Liverpool 0-0 Hull

Liverpool again struggled to gel and achieve any kind of fluidity to their play at Anfield. Hull were resolute despite missing key defensive players, Jakupovic the third choice keeper rose to the occasion in particular.

PlayON MoM: Eldin Jakupovic

Key Stat: 4.6 shots per game for Mario Balotelli, second only to Aguero. Shooting blanks.

Sunderland 0-2 Arsenal

Another fixture where Sunderland looked completely devoid of imagination and organization. Gus Poyet needs to get a handle on this urgently or they risk a relegation dogfight. Arsenal, on the other hand, performed well without overexerting themselves in a comfortable victory.

PlayON MoM: Alexis Sanchez

Key Stat: 86.5% average pass accuracy from Arsenal. Pass masters.

West Brom 2-2 Crystal Palace

Not the most glamorous tie of the week but both sides acquitted themselves well and can draw on the positives. They are far from the worst teams in the league and have it in them to avoid the drop.

PlayON MoM: Saido Berahino

Key Stat: 4.9 tackles per game from Mile Jedinak, joint highest in PL. Tough nut.

Swansea 2-0 Leicester

Swansea have been very impressive so far this season and it’s their defensive capabilities, not just the instinctive and entertaining play of Bony and Sigurdsson, that have put them up to a commendable sixth place. Can they stay in that zone?

PlayON MoM: Wilfried Bony

Key Stat: 7. Sigurdsson has laid on seven goals already this term.

Burnley 1-3 Everton

Burnley continue their struggle to gain a foothold in the Premier League but they are not consigned to freefall just yet. There were signs that they could threaten other likeminded teams, but investment will be sorely needed in January.

PlayON MoM: Samuel Eto’o

Key Stat: 3250 points for Eto’o, the highest PlayON points total for Gameweek 9. Old dog, new tricks.

Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea

Manchester United showed their credentials and grit, snatching an equalizer at the death. Title contenders? It’s still too early to tell.

PlayON MoM: Robin Van Persie

Key Stat: 6 key saves from Courtois in the Chelsea goal, indispensible.

QPR 2-0 Aston Villa

Harry Redknapp is a still employed and probably relieved man following this crucial victory. Villa look like they’ll limp to that much needed transfer window, goals have been hard to come by.

PlayON MoM: Charlie Austin

Key Stat: 5 straight defeats now for Aston Villa. Relegation form
