It’s time for The Travelers Championship to take centre stage on the PGA Tour again and that means one thing – plenty of birdies!
Moved from it’s usual June spot on the calendar, The Travelers sees a mid strength field assemble, with just two (Bubba Watson and Branden Grace) of the top 10 players in the world taking part. Despite this, the field has been boosted with big name Europeans such as Russell Knox, Soren Kjeldsen and Tyrell Hatton adding an international element to the event.
The course at TPC at River Highlands in Connecticut has seen some changes since last year in a move to make it more difficult for the Tour’s top professionals, however, it is still expected that the pins will be targeted with success over the course of the week. This should give the crowds something to cheer about and they usually come in huge numbers, with the Travelers Championship being the second most attended annual tournament on the PGA calendar.
The PlayON Pundit looks at which players you should have in your fantasy golf team this week.
High Priced Options
Bubba Watson ($21.6m): Fans favourite Bubba Watson is the defending champion and he loves this course. Watson won his first tournament on the PGA Tour here in 2010 and has finished in the Top 5 ever since. The Florida native has chosen to skip the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics in Rio to play here and will be confident of another high finish on a course that suits the big hitters.
Brooks Koepka ($21.3m): It was great to see Koepka return from an ankle injury at the PGA Championship last week and it was no surprise to see him finish in the Top 5. Koepka is an excellent player and his results speak for themselves. Before injury, the 26 year old had back to back second place finishes as well as a tied 13th place finish at the US Open and will likely earn you big PlayON points in Connecticut this week.
Mid Priced Options
Billy Hurley III ($14.4m): The former US marine has had a breakthrough year in 2016 winning at the Quicken Loans National as a sponsors invite. This seems to have given Hurley confidence to reignite what once was an extremely promising career. He is a straight hitter off the tee and is known for his ability to target pins with the long irons.
Jon Rahm ($12.5m): The Spaniard is quickly becoming a favourite with PlayON users. He offers great value at $12.5m and on his last outing on the PGA tour racked up an impressive 1,515 PlayON points while finishing second and last month’s Canadian Open.
Low Priced Options
Ben Crane ($8.4m): We tipped him at the Canadian Open and he performed. At $8.4m he’s definitely worth another gamble. Although the slow greens at TPC at River Highlands can neutralise the advantage of the better putters like Crane, the ball still has to go in the hole and this guy can do it.
Geoff Ogilvy ($8.1m): Remember Geoff Ogilvy? The Australian has endured a horrid season so far, missing cut after cut, but he showed glimpses of form in Ontario and will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of recent surprise winners on the Tour. He could be worth a gamble in your PlayON Fantasy Golf team this week.
