Key Match-Up Gameweek 11: Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa

Following his sacking last Sunday, the Premier League is entering the first post-Sherwood Gameweek of the 2015-16 season. On Monday, two of his former clubs – both with drastically contrasting fortunes this season – will duke it out at White Hart Lane.

The Teams:

It’s safe to say that Spurs look a very potent force this season.

With Harry Kane roaring back into goal-scoring mode with a hat-trick against Bournemouth last weekend, the last wayward piece of the jigsaw has found its place in Mauricio Pochettino’s master plan.

Villa meanwhile are stuck in a mire of finger wagging and blame shifting – with just one win in their opening ten games they’ve become a daily fantasy no-fly zone.

The two sides meet at White Hart Lane on Monday and the record between the clubs over the past six meetings stands overwhelmingly in Spurs’ favour – with the Londoners winning five of the last six games between the two.

In their most recent clash however, Villa ran out as winners – the departed Christian Benteke scoring the only goal of the game. Now rudderless and Benteke-less, it’s difficult to picture Villa turning this terrible start around come Monday night.

Despite Villa claiming the bulk – six – of their sorry nine goal haul this season on the road, Spurs boast arguably the best defence in the league – conceding eight in total and just three at home.

Denting their unbeaten home record will be no easy task.

It’s an entirely different story for the Villains – despite heavy investment to their defence – Micah Richards, Joleon Lescott and Jordan Amavi among the acquisitions – Villa have kept just one clean sheet this season and have shipped 19 goals in total.

The Picks:

Christian Eriksen

PlayON Price: 10.7m

GW10 Points: 1,650

Villa’s set-piece defensive frailties will be under particular scrutiny at White Hart Lane and given Christian Eriksen’s expertise on that front, he holds considerable fantasy value.

Spurs have scored more goals from free-kicks and corners – seven – than any other team in Premier League. Conversely, Villa have conceded a hefty 31 goalscoring opportunities from set-pieces.

The Dane’s two goals this season have come directly from free-kicks and his fantasy selectors will take confidence in Villa stopper Brad Guzan’s inability to deal with Sigurdsson’s stunning effort in Gameweek 10.

Furthermore, Eriksen has rekindled his creative stride once again. Claiming a third assist of the season – from six starts – last weekend, he also outranked every other PL player for chances created, forging five across the Gameweek.

Priced at 10.7m with PlayON, Eriksen will provide the main creative conduit for Tottenham. Combined with a renewed and on-song Harry Kane, his assist potential should be drastically increased.

Jan Verthongen

PlayON Price: 7.8m

GW10 Points: 1,025

Slotting in among Toby Alderweireld and Hugo Lloris to form the core defensive unit, Jan Vertonghen is starting to show his full defensive capabilities this season.

The Belgian has ranked top among defenders over the past six weeks for interceptions, counting six in the past four games, while Vertonghen has kept three clean sheets in his six starts this season.

Harry Kane

PlayON Price: 11.2m

GW10 Points: 4,450

Kane – a darling of fantasy football last season – has again become a daily fantasy no-brainer following his exploits in Gameweek 10.

In terms of goal threat, Spurs have been one of the most attack-minded teams in the league this season, ranking third among Premier League teams for attempts on goal with 158 and creating a chance every six minutes on average.

Despite his cold streak, Kane certainly contributed to those statistics. Prior to Gameweek 10, the Englishman had hit 32 goal attempts over the course of nine games – yielding a 3% conversion rate. Upping that ratio considerably with three goals from five attempts against Bournemouth, expect Kane 2.0 to put Villa to the sword.
